1863 letter

Dear Father, I am sorry I have not written in a while. It has been a busy few months because we are so outnumbered in our army . General Lee is still the best though. We have lost a few battles but will come back stronger than ever. We need to after all of the blood shed on Sunken Lane(aka Bloody Lane)  in the Battle of Antietam . Anyway take care of mother. There is no rules you shouldn't when it comes to her health. I don't care what anyone says, make sure she knows how the blacks have been treating their owners since the war started . Did you hear about the Emancipation Proclamation ? It is totally dumb and Lincoln is stupid to try to outsmart us. We still have control of slaves. The morale is pretty down though with Stonewall Jackson dying in Chancellorsville but our regiment has orders to fight very soon. I will make you proud! Lawrence

Dear Dad and Amelia, The war is not going great anymore , I know I have been telling you how great the war has been going, but it is not going well any longer. I was unfortunate enough to have to fight in the battle of Gettysburg. I know I'm only a foot soldier and not very high in the army but I could tell there was a lot of tactics going on that day. I think we made to fatal mistakes that caused us to lose this battle. One  is that we shouldn't have been there in the first place, we had had many victories over the summer  and where tiring those feds out so it was unnecessary for us to push into their soil. Another mistake was when that gap was open in the union army we did not press it, we could have split their army in half but instead we were badly beaten. I saw many friends die around me and was lucky to escape. I hope this war ends soon and I can see y'all then

Dear Dad and Amelia, I just got back from the battle of Antietam. It was gruesome, and especially bad since we were outnumbered. But for some reason those feds acted like we outnumbered them ten to one. General Lee moved us with excellent strategy. I was one of the unlucky ones who got placed in bloody lane although we were picking them off with our protection you can obviously tell why its bad to be in a place called bloody lane. Even though we technically lost the battle we killed so much more of those feds. I personally cant wait until we find the idiots on our side who lost our battle plans, and three perfectly good cigars to! During our retreat into Virginia was the most nerve-racking. No one know why the feds didn't attack then, they could've ended the war!  But we are all grateful they didn't. Anyway i think we will woop em soon so ill be home and helping on the farm soon.

!862 Parody to "I Lived"

Here are the lyrics to the parody Hope when the feds win war you give back the slaves Hope when you get the draft you hate and rave  Hope when you meet your prez you thinks he’s trash  Hope when you meet the blacks you think there rash  Hope when you see the gore your disgust grows  The only way war is fought is with flesh and bone And I hope you fight Stonewall but you run and hide Hope since we won Bull Run you’ll say  Feds, Feds, Feds, Feds won the fight Feds, Feds, Feds, Feds won the fight  The Union fought hard and valiantly  But feds just won that’s the reality  Ya with every setback oh I swear feds won Hope that you lose morale and you all give up  And then we won Antietam and McClellan is done And though you think you won you technically lost  But when we kill more ur men I’ll say Feds, Feds, Feds, Feds won the fight  Feds, Feds, Feds, Feds won the fight  The Union fought hard and valiantly  But feds just won that’s the reali

Popular Songs for the Feds

Top Three Songs for CSA 1. "Dixie" This song was important to the Feds because it was the anthem they would play during all of the attacks that the Feds led. Even though it was written by a Daniel Emmett, an abolitionist, for mockery at slaves for entertainment the South felt it greatly resembled their identity. It was the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy and the tune was catchy enough to be one of Abe Lincoln's favorite songs.   Here is a video of the song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OKdbc0DYpM 2. "The Bonnie Blue Flag" This song was important to the Feds because it kept up morale. It was another unofficial anthem that was one of the most popular in the South second only to "Dixie". "The Bonnie Blue Flag" was written by Henry McCarthy and was to the tune of "The Irish Jaunting Car". People felt connected to it and the song was instantly wanted all over the South.  Here is a video of the song- https://ww

Dear Amelia and Dad, The war is going great for us. I just got back from the battle of Manassas. We whooped those feds good. They had 37,000 soldiers and we only had 22,000! The odds were against us in numbers and we were being beaten in the first part. But out of the haze of smoke we could all see Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and his legendary brigade holding strong. With our reinforcements behind us we charged Beauregards cowardly forces yipping in glee. Deserters the lot of them, we chased them all the way back to Washington. Some of my friends did die though, they were good men. From the feeling im getting from this battle I can tell this war will not be easy or quick. But never fear, we will win it for the union.

dear dad and Amelia, I just got recruited into the army and I have arrived at my new barracks at the time of this letter being written. I am sorry I did not say good bye when I left. I did not have the heart to tell you I was leaving. But I am honored to fight the north who are imposing on our right to own slaves. Blacks seem happy enough, slavery must be ok . so who are these northerners to tell us not to have slaves. I am learning how to use my rifle today. the south says we need to make every bullet count so we do not run out of resources. They just gave me my cartridge Box today along with my rifle so I can practice loading my rifle quicker than the enemy. I am hoping to get transferred to the floating battery and help my brothers in arms keep fort Sumter safe from the northern invaders. Or I might want to get transferred to cavalry so I can get my own horse . I will send more letters soon I love yall very much and hope to see you soon.

Enlistment Letter: My thoughts on the War

August 1, 1861 Dear Father, Today, we got word from General Lee . He gave us instructions and told us about the new capital in Richmond, Virginia . He is such a great guy for fighting for our right to keep the things below us where they belong . I am growing closer to some of my fellow soldiers but am excited to see you again. They have us seamen working hard from dawn to dusk. I am so tired but am proud to fight for my country even if I don't like rules . Some of the other soldiers are jerks but don't worry I'll beat them up for you. At least I am fighting by real men who know how life should be . I can't wait to make you proud. I can't believe these blacks think it is ok to step out of their place. We will put them back where they belong. I won't let those nasty being take your job away from you , no matter what any laws say. Mother

April, 25 1861 My dears't Ivarine,          I know you will be happy to know that i have just been in-listed in the Confederate Army . I'm glad to be fightin for a cause i really believe in-those slaves woodn't last a chance without us, no way should thay be able to roam the streets freely! That damn Lincoln has called up an army of 75,000.  I wonder who our Luitenent general will be. 'Heard that Lincoln asked Robert E. Lee to lead the Union but he wouldn't.   Once all these folks realize the truth that slavery is needed we can go back to are normal life's maybe we can even buy a slave of our very own. We've already got some support in thos border states- they fired on Union soliders marchin to D.C. to try and stop them. Lost a few men-'Bout 11 in total.  Hope fully that ol Lincoln will have trobles gettin all those volunteers. That evil man makes my blood boil. I miss you and the kids so much, hopefully i can return home soon.                 Sincer
