Dear Dad and Amelia, I think the war will end soon. Our army shrinks by the day. Everyone is leaving the army becuase no one believes in Lee or the cause anymore. we fought the best we could but there were just to many of them. 1 day later We just had the battle of Sailors creek. I got captured and I doubt this letter will get to you. My whole regiment died. im ready to come home. Im done with this war and everything about it. lees army is now tiny. This is because about 30,000 of us were captured and 6,000 killed.           love James Brooks

the surrender- a letter home

Pops, Today is a sad day I will remember for all my life. We have finally had to surrender to them tanks up in the north. After all these battles, I am surprised that I have even survived some of these bloody battles we have endured. At saylors creek we had to retreat the entire battle, we didn’t even stand a chance. About 1/3 of Lee’s army surrendered, and it was soon to be over for all of us. I am sad to say that we have lost this war, because it has ruined our way of life, and the dirty union has only preserved theirs. But this isn’t over yet. I have heard rumors about not treating them blacks the same, just so that they know that it was out way of life. I’m sorry to bear this bad news. Your son Fred

March 13,  1865 Ivarene-           It is done, we have lost the battle. I'm so sad to have said this, yet we put up a good fight, and I will be returning home soon. Im lucky to be alive- thousands of dead bodies lay on the battle fields waiting to buried.  After Richmond was defeated, we fled, with the Union troops outnumbering us following close behind. We had no other choice but to surrender at Saylor's Creek. A treaty was made at Appomattox Courthouse. Lincoln's 2nd Inaugurated Address  happened a few weeks ago. He wants to bring our states back to the union- it was odd though, there was a weird feeling in the air from the Union- it was almost forgiving. Well so what, I don't care that we have been defeated, or that that ol Lincoln is President again but he will never have my respect. I hope to see you and the kids very soon, and have missed yall so much.                                                                                                Sincerely,

Dear family,        I miss you all. I want you all to know that I love ya'll and will try to write as much as possible. I have some news that I would like to update ya'll on. I have been recently informed about the election of 1864. The democrats elected General McClellan for president. He then faced Lincoln in the election, and won! Lincoln was upset, but he then got re-elected and won. Everything is so confusing right now, but as long as our country is safe and in good hands, that's okay with me-I guess. Honestly I hate that damn Lincoln though. Stupid abolitionists. I have been having so much fun doing my job. I really love it. I miss ya'll so much and wish me luck on the battlefield!
Dear pops, I haves foughts in so many battles that I cans barely remember the times. All thats sticks in my head is the thought of bloody people all over the battlefield. I have eaten lotsa salt pork and hardtack. That gettysburg battle was a whoopin. We got flanked and banged all the way back. So many of our great men fell to the bloody union. I hope to win me a battle soon because this war might have taken a turn. Hope to sees you soon Fred

Dear Dad and Amelia, The war is going terrible right now . All my friends are dying and I want to come and be done with this fighting. I don't care about slavery as much as staying alive. As y'all know after my last letter I was captured and put in a POW camp. I was one of the lucky ones to get out in the prisoner exchange which has all but dried up these days. A lot of my regiment wasn't so lucky and they died from disease in the camp. We are now almost completely out of food as the unions ruthless blockade continues in our ports. All these things are insignificant compared to the abuse I faced in Shermans march. It was terrible, they swept in like wind stealing and burning whatever they wanted. Whoever tried to fight them were cut down in a barrage of rifle fire. And those stupid feds not only stole food, they stole money and property like slaves and animals. I'm ready to come home and settle down on the farm, when will this blasted war end already! much love,
