Top Three Songs for CSA 1. "Dixie" This song was important to the Feds because it was the anthem they would play during all of the attacks that the Feds led. Even though it was written by a Daniel Emmett, an abolitionist, for mockery at slaves for entertainment the South felt it greatly resembled their identity. It was the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy and the tune was catchy enough to be one of Abe Lincoln's favorite songs. Here is a video of the song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OKdbc0DYpM 2. "The Bonnie Blue Flag" This song was important to the Feds because it kept up morale. It was another unofficial anthem that was one of the most popular in the South second only to "Dixie". "The Bonnie Blue Flag" was written by Henry McCarthy and was to the tune of "The Irish Jaunting Car". People felt connected to it and the song was instantly wanted all over the South. A nation divided A view from a discouraged rebel Dawn breaks the morning skies Creeping along bloody lane The world mocks us with these mornings filled with beauty, These precious moments in the midst of chaos and gore Another battle is fought Another man down In the end is it worth it? Only time will tell Because that number, that thousands of casualties From only one battle keeps climbing I guess we we are all crazy in the end To kill others over pride and a sickening sense of justice As if we know what human life is worth It only ends in death and destruction Were the slaves really worth fighting for? I will fight for my way of life but after Pickett's charge at Gettysburg again I ask Is it worth it? When we prove our loyalty we lose our conscience When we are attacked by all 75,000 and still no side lets up Is it worth it? Sherman’s march will be the end to all our soldiers wearing red They now wear grey the color of death ...
Dear Dad and Amelia, The war is going terrible right now . All my friends are dying and I want to come and be done with this fighting. I don't care about slavery as much as staying alive. As y'all know after my last letter I was captured and put in a POW camp. I was one of the lucky ones to get out in the prisoner exchange which has all but dried up these days. A lot of my regiment wasn't so lucky and they died from disease in the camp. We are now almost completely out of food as the unions ruthless blockade continues in our ports. All these things are insignificant compared to the abuse I faced in Shermans march. It was terrible, they swept in like wind stealing and burning whatever they wanted. Whoever tried to fight them were cut down in a barrage of rifle fire. And those stupid feds not only stole food, they stole money and property like slaves and animals. I'm ready to come home and settle down on the farm, when will this blasted war end already! much love, ...
